PAVEMENT MILLING – WHAT IS IT?

The process of pavement milling is the removal of the damaged layer of asphalt only. This can range from a measured portion of the asphalt layer, to removal of the entire layer if necessary. A milling machine (also known as a cold planer) utilizes a large, rolling drum that grinds the asphalts surface. Carbide cutters on the surface of the drum cut the pavement, and then load it onto a conveyor, while water reduces the heat created by the machine.

WHY IT’S DONE

A big reason that pavement milling is done is the recycling aspect. The ground up asphalt is used as an aggregate in fresh pavement, which is both cost-effective and positive from an environmental perspective. Milling is also a an effective solution in leveling uneven or bumpy surfaces, as well as acting as a binding agent in the asphalt. This strengthens the integrity of the parking lot itself. A similar process known as ‘micro milling’ can also be implemented, producing a smoother final surface. As a result, a thinner layer of asphalt can be applied to complete the project (since a shallower depth of asphalt is required).

THE MULTIPLE BENEFITS

There are plenty of benefits to performing milling in the restoration of your commercial parking lot. To begin with, milling machines can be configured to remove only the exact amount of asphalt layer that needs to be replaced. This is simply much more efficient than the often unnecessary removal of all layers of the pavement. Another benefit is outright cost. Since milling only removes the affected layers, the amount of asphalt, labor and removal needed for repair is less. And lastly, ‘speed’. The whole process of milling is faster than total, traditional removal – meaning your parking lot can be reopened sooner.

PROTECTING THE FOUNDATION

When traditional, heavy equipment is used for pavement removal, it can take roughly five times the amount of pass over compared to a milling machine. As a result, an enormous amount of stress is placed on the foundation of your parking lot. This unnecessary stress pushes moisture to the pavements surface, and destabilizes the structure. As a result, a contractor will typically have to perform additional repair work, taking more time and costing more money. As a result, the milling process is far more efficient, safe and cost-effective to you and your business’s bottom line. Request a quote below to start a conversation with an expert at NP.
